Holden Thorp on keeping the humanities vital

The American Academy of Arts & Sciences argues that the humanities and social sciences are necessary for a vibrant, competitive and secure nation. This is not the usual argument for the humanities, and that’s a good thing, says WUSTL Provost Holden Thorp, PhD. He will give the annual Phi Beta Kappa/Sigma Xi lecture April 17.

Likely culprit in spread of colon cancer identified

New research at the School of Medicine and Vanderbilt University Medical Center has implicated a poorly understood protein called PLAC8 in the spread of colon cancer. Researchers say it could be a target for new cancer therapies.

Kidder installed as Macias Professor

Anthropologist Tristram Kidder, PhD, was installed April 7 as the Edward S. and Tedi Macias Professor in Arts & Sciences during a ceremony in Holmes Lounge, Ridgley Hall. Kidder has served as chair of the Department of Anthropology since 2008.

A memorial service for Murray Weidenbaum, PhD, who died March 20, will be held later this month. The service will begin at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 26, in Graham Chapel on the Danforth Campus, with a reception in Holmes Lounge, Ridgley Hall, from 4-5 p.m.
